‘Agency driver image has to change’ says new operations director

AFTER 27 years in driver recruitment Paul Keyworth says he’s passionate about improving the image of agency drivers among transport managers.

Paul’s commitment to this cause comes as he joins Midlands logistics specialists Employ Recruitment UK Ltd as their operations director, having worked as northern operations director for ADR, the UK’s largest agency supplier of professional LGV drivers.

“There is a complete misconception within the sector that becoming an agency driver is something of a last resort,” said Paul, “as though these drivers are unemployable elsewhere.

“This is to do with trust within the industry – transport managers don’t trust agency drivers with their kit, yet agency drivers are the ones who get into a different vehicle every day, go to a new delivery point every day and have to learn different operating procedures every day.

“That makes them more skilled, more experienced, more adaptable and more flexible than someone who’s worked for the same company for 30 years.

“It also ignores the fact that even to get on our books here at Employ Recruitment UK Ltd those drivers go through a strict vetting procedure, including running licence checks on them every three months and ID checks to ensure they are legal to work.

“In fact, the quality of our drivers is so high that nine were taken on as permanent staff in January alone.”

Current clients of Employ Recruitment UK Ltd include Marston’s Breweries, Sainsbury’s and DHL.

He added that the benefit of using agency drivers were numerous, from giving employers an opportunity to ‘try before they buy’ and because of the flexibility such a workforce can bring to a fleet, particularly during peak periods.

He added: “The whole reason I joined Employ is because it is a respected recruitment business with compliance at its core, and everyone here is dedicated to ensuring the job is done properly and that every driver who is supplied by us is legal and trained.

“Hopefully very soon there will be a code of practice for employment agencies which will mean there is a guaranteed level of competence for our industry.”

Employ Recruitment UK Ltd also currently provides Driver and Trainer CPC training courses at their Derbyshire headquarters.
