Christmas is one of the busiest times of year in the transport industry, as HGV drivers work around the clock to ensure all deliveries are made in time for Christmas Day.
Employ Recruitment have seen a 15% increase across all clients, with some client’s shift volume increasing by 40% from November to December.
The transport industry is known for its peak periods in school holidays and bank holidays, but Christmas is the most important time as so many people are relying on their deliveries. Often many drivers are working 65 hour weeks, working all hours day and night and finishing after 14 hour shifts to ensure that everything gets delivered on time across the country.
Charlotte Keeling, Operations Manager at Employ Recruitment reiterates, “Drivers are so important this time of year and the increase in shifts is often filled by drivers doing an extra shift as we are seeing a National shortage across the industry. We encourage drivers to enjoy a much needed rest once it quiets down between Christmas Day and early January. We do where possible try to ensure that everyone who has helped during Christmas peak receives work in January, when the industry is known for being quiet.”
Employ Recruitment has a good mix of contracts around the midlands with Moy Park, Ashbourne and DHL Dunelm, Stoke-on-Trent peaks being in January meaning that drivers who have worked for Marston’s Brewery in Burton-on-Trent in the run up to Christmas can assess at these nearby clients and ensure that they have work in the New Year.
We encourage anyone going into the supermarket, pubs and retailers this Christmas to take a moment to think about all of the hard work that goes into keeping the shelves stocked so that you can have the perfect Christmas.
