Why your next ex military job should be as a HGV driver

As your military career comes to an end soon, it’s important to line up potential jobs to support your family in the future – and we wanted to let you know that becoming a HGV driver is a great prospect for you.

Did you know that there is a shortage of around 60,000 HGV drivers in the UK alone? With this large gap in talent, the industry has turned its intentions towards finding semi-skilled people to fill their vacancies, with the ex military a key target area.

Whilst the building, construction and manufacturing industries have typically been places to search for an ex military job, here’s just 5 reasons why you should be looking towards becoming a HGV driver instead…

1 – Great salary

A HGV driver job offers a great base salary due to the shortage of talent. According to recruitment website Total Jobs, The average salary for a HGV Class 1 licence is over £31,000 in the UK with the highest earners working in London and the East Midlands.

2 – Plenty of opportunities

As we said at the top of this blog, the UK has a shortage of 60,000 HGV drivers meaning there are plenty of opportunities for those new to the industry and who are trained to HGV Class 1 status. Employ offers a range of vacancies from the East Midlands, including vacancies with their lead vend clients including Marston’s, Moy Park & Sainsburys in Stoke & Stone. 3 – Already skilled

Depending upon your role in the military it may mean that you already have the driver training and certificates enabling you to start driving right away. This means you can get into the jobs market earlier giving you even more opportunities. For those that require additional training, from driver regulations to fuel efficiency.

4 – Financial support is on its way

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has admitted it’s looking into ways of getting more ex-servicemen into the industry. This includes looking into a student-style loan to give people the opportunity to get back into a job, and an agency or company a brand new driver.

5 – Better lifestyle

Being away from your family is hard, especially for months on end in the military. HGV driver jobs may mean you’re away for full days rather than months, meaning you can spend less time away from those at home.
