Blue Monday: Looking After Yourself on the Road

Blue Monday: Looking After Yourself on the Road

Blue Monday has gained a reputation as the toughest day of the year. Dark mornings, cold weather, post-Christmas fatigue and long shifts can all combine to make everything feel heavier than usual.

For drivers, that pressure doesn’t just affect mood. It can affect focus, patience and decision-making too. And in a job where awareness and judgement matter, how you feel before and during a shift really does count.

The good news is that wellbeing doesn’t have to mean big lifestyle changes. Small, realistic habits can make a real difference, especially when work involves long hours sitting, early starts or irregular routines.

Movement is one of the simplest places to start. Spending long periods in the cab can leave muscles tight and joints stiff, particularly in the back, hips and shoulders. Gentle stretches, even for a minute or two during a break, can help improve circulation, reduce discomfort and keep your body feeling looser behind the wheel. Staying physically comfortable helps reduce fatigue and distraction as the shift goes on.

Sleep is another key factor. Poor rest can creep up quietly, slowing reaction times and making it harder to concentrate. Blue Monday is a good reminder to pay attention to sleep habits where possible. Simple changes like winding down before bed, limiting screens late at night, and keeping a consistent routine when shifts allow can help support better rest over time.

What you eat and drink also plays a part. Long days often mean grabbing what’s quick, but heavy or sugary foods can lead to energy crashes later on. Staying hydrated and choosing lighter options where possible can help keep energy levels steadier and concentration sharper throughout the day.

Mental wellbeing matters just as much. Stress, low mood or mental overload can show up as irritability, rushing or zoning out. Taking a few slow breaths, stepping outside the cab for fresh air, or doing a quick eye or focus reset during a break can help clear your head and bring your attention back to the task in front of you.

Blue Monday isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s about recognising that tough days happen, especially in winter, and taking small steps to look after yourself. Those steps don’t just help you feel better — they help you stay safe.

And that’s what really matters.
